RRSD Student Grant Information

One RRSD goal is to develop student interest and involvement in the field of robotics and remote systems for hazardous environments. To accomplish this, RRSD will fund student activities that relate to developing or applying robotics and remote systems for hazardous environments at the K-12 student level. Established K-12 educational institutions are eligible for student grants once every two years. Universities are not eligible for student grants. Grants are subject to availability of funds

Only established K-12 educational institutions may apply at most once every two years. Typical grants are for $500.

  • Email the following information to Leonel Lagos, ANS RRSD Vice Chair. Additional information is optional.
  • RRSD will confirm the application was received.
  • The RRSD Executive Committee meets in June and November of each year. Grant applications will be approved or rejected at these meetings. Applicants will be notified after the meetings.
  • Funding is limited each year, so a limited number of applications will be approved.

  • The following information is needed in the Application:
    • Name (Group, School, Club, etc.)
    • Leader’s Name, Title, Address, Phone and Email (must be over 21)
    • Description of Group or Club
    • Requested Grant Amount ($500 max)
    • Describe how the grant will be spent
    • Describe how the activity relates to robtoics and remote systems in hazardous environments
    • Additional information as needed (optional)
    • If RRSD accepts the application, we will also need the following:

Purdue University FIRST Robotics Team – On 11/13/05 RRSD awarded $500 to the Purdue University FIRST Robotics Team. Purdue is in West Lafayette, IN, and the FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) team includes university students and local high school students.

Titan Robotics Club – On 7/10/05 RRSD awarded $500 to the Titan Robotics Club in Bellevue, WA.

2004 Recipients

Aiken Prep – On 11/14/04 RRSD awarded $500 to the Aiken Prep in Aiken, SC.

Eastern Idaho Professional – Technical High School – On 11/14/04 RRSD awarded $500 to the Eastern Idaho Professional-Technical High School in Idaho Falls, ID.

Hanover High School Battlebots IQ Team – On 11/14/04 RRSD awarded $500 to the Hanover High School Battlebots IQ Team in Hanover, MA.

Clarkson University FIRST Robotics Team – On 6/21/04 RRSD awarded $800 to the Clarkson University FIRST Robotics Team. Clarkson is in Potsdam NY and the FIRST team includes university students and local high school students.

Tennessee FIRST LEGO League Tournament Committee – On 6/21/04 RRSD awarded $800 to the Tennessee FIRST LEGO League Tournament Committee. The committe will fund several FIRST Lego Legue teams in the Knoxville TN area.

South Ridge High School – On 6/21/04 RRSD awarded $800 to the South Ridge High School mini-sumo robotics program. The program funds several teams to build mini sumo robots and then the teams compete against each other. South Ridge High School is located in Kennewick, WA

Aiken County Robotics Team – On 4/12/04 RRSD awarded $500 to the Aiken County Robotics Team M’Aiken Magic. The funds will help support the FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team in Aiken County SC. See summary of the M’Aiken Magic results at the FIRST National Championship .

2004 ANS Winter Meeting – On 2/13/04 RRSD awarded $250 to support student travel to the 2004 ANS Winter Meeting. The meeting will be held in Washington DC during November of 2004.

2004 ANS Annual Meeting – On 2/9/04 RRSD awarded $250 to support student travel to the 2004 ANS Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held in Pittsburgh, PA during June of 2004.

2004 ANS Student Conference – On 1/16/04 RRSD awarded $500 to support student travel to the 2004 ANS Student Conference. $400 was used to support student travel costs and $100 was awarded to the best paper presented on robotics and remote systems. The meeting was held at the University of Wisconsin in Madison Wisconsin during April of 2004.

2003 Recipients

2004 RRSD Student Robotic Competition – On 12/5/03 RRSD awarded $5,000 to the ANS 10th Topical Meeting on Robotics and Remote Systems in Gainesville FL. The funds were used for the student contest prizes, contest preperations, and student travel assistance. The competition included several college teams and a high school team.

2003 ANS Winter Meeting – On 5/15/03 RRSD awarded $250 to support student travel to the 2003 ANS Winter Meeting. The meeting will be held in New Orleans, LA during November, 2003.

American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) – On 6/10/03 RRSD awarded $800 to the AMSE to help support the FIRST Lego League teams in the Oak Ridge TN area. See the Fall 2003 RRSD Newsletter for further details.

Aiken County Robotics Team – On 6/10/03 RRSD awarded $800 to the Aiken County Robotics Team M’Aiken Magic. The funds will help support the FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team in Aiken County SC. See the Fall 2003 RRSD Newsletter for further details.

Idaho Falls School District – On 6/9/03 RRSD awarded $800 to the Idaho Falls School Districts 91 and 93 to help support the RoboChallenge teams in the Idaho Falls, ID area. See the Fall 2003 RRSD Newsletter for further details. See the national article about the program from “Techniques” magazine.

2003 ANS Annual Meeting – On 5/15/03 RRSD awarded $250 to support student travel to the 2003 ANS Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held in San Diego, CA during June, 2003.

Aiken High School – RRSD awarded Aiken High School (Aiken SC) $1,000 in December of 2002 to compete in the FIRST Robotics competition. The competition was held in March, 2003, in Atlanta, GA. The team won several matches and did very well at the competition.

2003 ANS Student Conference – On 12/19/02 RRSD awarded $500 to the Berkley Student Chapter of the ANS to support the ANS Student Conference. $400 was used to support student travel costs and $100 was awarded to the best paper presented on robotics and remote systems. The conference was at the University of California – Berkley CA in April 2003.

2002 Recipients

Aiken Preparatory School – RRSD awarded $750 to Aiken Preparatory School (Aiken SC) to compete in the First Lego League Challenge. The competition was overwhelmed with teams and couldn’t provide enough playing fields. The Aiken team is prepared for the next competition.

Amador Valley High School – RRSD awarded $500 to Amador Valley High School (Livermore, CA) to compete in the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems, International (AUVSI) Underwater Unmanned Vehicle Competition. The contest was held in Florida and Amador finished in 7th place, above several college teams.

RRSD awarded $1,300 to Amador Valley High School to attend the ANS 9th Topical Meeting on Robotics and Remote Systems in Seattle, WA during March of 2001. The funds were used to cover student travel and lodging expenses associated with exhibiting their vehicle at the RRSD Topical Meeting Vendor Exhibit.

2000 Recipients

2000 ANS Student Conference – RRSD awarded $600 to support the ANS Student Conference in 2000. The conference was held in Texas.

1999 Recipients

1999 RRSD Student Robotic Competition – RRSD awarded $6,600 to the ANS 8th Topical Meeting on Robotics and Remote Systems in Pittsburgh, PA. The funds were used for prize money and student travel for the robotics competition held at the meeting. The competition included high school and college participants.

1997 Recipients

1997 RRSD Student Robotic Competition – RRSD awarded $1,600 to the ANS 7th Topical Meeting on Robotics and Remote Systems in Augusta, GA. The funds were used for student travel for the robotics competition held at the meeting. The competition included several college teams.
